Abstract

The title of this research is "Diskriminasi Ras dalam Kumpulan Puisi Montage of a Dream Karya Langston Hughes”. The purpose of this study is to reveal the elements of poetry, namely diction and imagery and describe racial discrimination in a collection of poems by Langston Hughes. The research method used is descriptive qualitative design method. The approach chosen was the literary sociology approach to the work emphasized in a collection of poems by Langston Hughes in 1951- 1960. Based on the results of this study, it can be seen that: (1) in a collection of poems by Langston Hughes no formal dction was found in this poem, fourteen informal diction (wonder, ain’t, bug, can't, buck, gonna, that's, owe, I'll , he's, bop, guess, you're, and donkey), and one diction Colloquial (President), one diction slang (come out yourself) .In addition, there are eleven images of vision (visual imagery), three images of the hearing (auditory imagery), one organic imagery and as well as one nameless image.These jokes and imagery are used to give a more vivid picture of poetry. (2) The description of racial discrimination in the collection of poems is as a form of expression and criticism. The description of racial discrimination in a collection of poems by Langston Hughes that describes what forms of discrimination committed by white is dominated by racial discrimination in the form of verbal and attitudes in everyday life.
