Abstract
Sleep disorders or insomnia is one of the health problems that are often faced by the elderly, this condition requires serious attention. The poor quality of sleep in the elderly is caused by increased sleep latency, reduced sleep efficiency and early awakening due to the aging process. The aging process causes a decrease in the function of neurotransmitters, which is marked by a decrease in the distribution of norepinephrine. This causes changes in circadian rhythms, where there is a change in the sleep of the elderly in the Non-Rafid Eye Movement (NREM) phases 3 and 4. So that the elderly almost do not have phase 4 or night sleep. Disruption of sleep patterns can be done with pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapy. One of the management of sleep pattern disorders in the elderly with nonpharmacological therapy is progressive muscle relaxation to improve sleep patterns. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of progressive muscle relaxation in the elderly in improving sleep patterns in the elderly. This research method uses a case study strategy study. The authors performed progressive muscle relaxation therapy once a day for 30 minutes 15 consecutive movements for three days. The results obtained after performing progressive muscle relaxation therapy showed an increase in sleep patterns from difficulty sleeping to regular sleep. It can be concluded that there is an effect on progressive muscle relaxation in improving sleep patterns in the elderly.
