Abstract

KIKI BLESENKY : Modification of Cloth Mask with Chitosan as Antibacterial. Guided by SALIH MUHARAM and LELA MUKMILAH YUNINGSIH. Cloth masks cannot provide effective protection to filter bacteria and particulates that enter through the respiratory tract due to the large gaps between the fibers in the mask. In this research, modifications to the density and antibacterial properties of cloth masks using chitosan have been carried out. Research have been conducted using the chitosan amine fixation method through epiclohydrin crosslinking. The density and antibacterial properties of staphylococcus aureus are regulated based on a chitosan concentration of 1.0%; 1,5%; and 2.0%. Furthermore, the characterization of the functional groups, density, pressure, and antibacterial properties of the modified masks were measured successively by infrared spectrophotometers, scanning electron microscopy, medical mask differential pressure testers, and under-test filters The results showed that chitosan had been cross-linked on the mask cloth indicated by the presence of the amine spectrum at a wave number of 2360.91 cm-1 - 2362.84 cm-1 and imine at 1554.15 cm -1 - 1555.86 cm-1 . The density of the mask changed after being modified with chitosan from 18.20 μm to 5.51 μm at a concentration of epiclorohydrin 2.0%, the results of the compressive test of 16.71 ±0.09 Pa / cm2 indicated that the mask was comfortable to use for breathing and the results of the filtration efficiency test of staphylococcus aureus bacteria reached >90% at an interval of 3 hours.
