Abstract

The research about the reduction of Pb (II) metal ions by activated charcoal corn cobs modified chitosan-epichlorohydrin has been conducted. Chitosan-activated charcoal composites were prepared by molding in the form of beads in NaOH solution followed by crosslinking of chitosan-epichlorohydrin to improve chemical stabilization of chitosan . The optimum adsorption conditions were conducted by using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) method with the behnken box optimization model. Adsorption process in analysis using two isotherme models namely Langmuir and Freundlich and determination of the rate of adsorption constant is calculated based on the kinetics model of the pseudo first-order and pseudo second-order. Atomic Adsorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) was applied to analyze the concentration of Pb (II) before and after the adsorption process. The results of Pb (II) adsorption optimization by chitosanepichlorohydrin-modified activated charcoal were pH 5, mass 0.8 gram and 120 minutes contact time with adsorption percentage of 95.68%. The result showed that the process adsorption of active charcoal modified chitosan-epiklorohydrin followed the Freundlich (multilayer) isotherm model and adsorbents was controlled by a pseudo second-order kinetics model.
