Abstract

The research entitled Life Problems of the Main Female Characters in Michael Cunningham's Novel The Hours. This purpose is to see what are behind the causes of life problems in the main female characters and to describe the events in the female main character. The research method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method and an objective research approach. Based on Stanton's (1965: 16) theory, disputes in this study are classified into two parts: (1) External, namely social conflict and physical conflict, (2) Internal, namely inner or psychological conflict. Disputes that occur on the basis of differences of opinion will certainly lead to certain conflicts. For example, in this research, the writer found several reasons behind the conflict based on Soerjono Soekanto's theory (2006: 91-92) such as differences between individuals, cultural differences, differences in interests, and social changes.
