Abstract

The title of this research is “Representasi Letusan Gunung Tambora Dalam Puisi Darkness Karya Lord Byron”. the purpose of this research is to find out the representation Eruption of Mount Tambora which Lord Byron wrote in his poem entitled Darkness, through figurative language and imagery. The research method used, descriptive qualitative to explain meanings and sentences in a poem. The chosen approach is a sociology of literature to explain intrinsic elements figurative language and imagery to reveal social factor contained in literary works. Based on the results of this research it can be seen that: 1) Through the personification of Byron representing the conditions of the world, as a result of bursts of the eruption of Mount Tambora until the stratosphere makes the world dark. Through the personification figurative language of personification Byron portrays humans starving because a year without summer, the world fails to harvest. Through hyperbole Byron describes humans starving and they loot every convenience store. Through visual imagery he saw the situation as a result Mount Tambora eruption , the world was completely dark without any sunlight shining on the earth. Through what auditory imagery he heard at the time of the Mount Tambora eruption Humans continued to feel sadness because many of the dead victims collapsed from deadly diseases. Through kinesthetic imagery Byron explains to the reader As a result of the eruption, many humans were starving and forced and looting.2) Byron represents the eruption of Mount Tambora through the style of personification, hyperbole, and imagery so to explain the situation of darkness, hunger, fear, sadness, and cold that are experienced by humans.
