Abstract
This study aims to analyze the intrinsic and extrinsic elements of "Senyum Karyamin", "Wangon and Jatilawang" short stories, and "Beggars and Solawat Badar" by Ahmad Tohari and find out whether the three short stories can be used as teaching materials for class XI high school students. The research method used is descriptive qualitative method. The technique of collecting data uses observation, tests, questionnaires and documentation. The results of the analysis state that there are intrinsic elements in the form of flow, character / characterization, and background and extrinsic elements in the form of community background, author's background, and values contained in the short story, according to the second semester XI syllabus with Competency Standards and Basic Competencies in Language learning Indonesia which uses KTSP, namely appreciating or analyzing short story literary works. These three short stories deserve to be used as teaching materials for high school students of class XI referring to the principle of selecting teaching materials and aspects of the selection of teaching materials, namely the principles of relevance, consistency, and adequacy, as well as aspects of language, psychology, and cultural background.
