Abstract

Laut Bercerita is a novel that raises feminist issues. This novel, which has a background in the history of the 1998 Indonesian reformation, shows two perspectives involving two separate generations in the life journey of its character. One of these perspectives is to highlight female figures in describing historical events and different perspectives in understanding and appreciating women's experiences in the social and political context in Indonesia. Important research was conducted to see the personal ideology of women as reflected in the novel Laut Bercerita. This study aims to describe the personal ideology of women contained in Leila S. Chudori's novel Laut Bercerita by using a feminist literary criticism approach. The research method used is a qualitative method with a descriptive-qualitative research design. The results of this research are representations of women's personal ideology in the form of women's leadership and familialism, which are reflected in the female characters in the novel Laut Bercerita. The female characters are Kinan, Asmara, Ibu, and Anjani. The female characters in the story are depicted as negotiating, voicing equality, and empowering women by demonstrating the presence of women's leadership. In addition, the female characters in the story are used as models or prototypes of women who are normatively acceptable in the established culture. This can be referred to as the ideology of familialism, which describes individual women as women (mothers), women (wives), and women (children).
