Abstract

Hypertension is a condition where blood pressure rises from normal limits, with systolic greater than 140 mmHg and diastolic greater than 90 mmHg, where the cause is often not recognized and will only be felt when the patient experiences complications. Hypertension is also if left unchecked will be fatal and even cause death but hypertension can also be overcome with pharmacological and nonpharmacological therapies. Management of hypertension can be done pharmacologically, patients are given anti-hypertensive drugs. Non-pharmacologically, patients can be taught progressive muscle relaxation techniques. Progressive muscle relaxation technique is a way of relaxation technique and a series of muscle contractions and relaxations that are very easy and practical because the movements are easy and practical, can be done anytime and anywhere besides that it has no side effects. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of progressive muscle relaxation therapy on reducing hypertension and reducing pain intensity. This research method uses a case study strategy. This progressive muscle relaxation therapy was carried out for 3 consecutive days, carried out for 30 minutes after that observing again. The results obtained after progressive muscle relaxation therapy were blood pressure originally 170/100 mmHg decreased to 140/90 mmHg, pain scale originally 5 (0-10) to 2 (0-10). It can be concluded that the application of progressive muscle relaxation therapy is effective for reducing blood pressure and pain intensity in patients with hypertension
