Abstract
Gastritis, commonly known as "stomachache," is an inflammation of the stomach lining caused by factors such as irritation, infection, irregular eating patterns, and excessive coffee consumption. Data from the Sukabumi City Health Office in 2019 showed that the percentage of gastritis cases in Sukabumi City reached 5%, with a total of 23,234 cases, making it the seventh most prevalent disease out of the top 20 major diseases in the city. Gastritis can be managed through pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies, such as the application of deep breathing relaxation techniques. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of applying deep breathing relaxation technique in reducing pain intensity among patients with acute gastritis in the H. M Muraz Ward, 3rd Floor, R. Syamsudin, S.H Regional General Hospital, Sukabumi City. This research employed observation and interviews with one participant diagnosed with acute gastritis. The participant underwent three sessions of deep breathing relaxation technique routinely for three consecutive days, with each session lasting 15 minutes. The patient's pain intensity was measured before and after the intervention using a numerical rating scale (NRS). The data were analyzed and a significant decrease in pain intensity was found after the application of deep breathing relaxation technique. These findings indicate that the application of deep breathing relaxation technique is effective in reducing pain intensity among patients with acute gastritis. The discovery highlights the potential benefits of non-pharmacological interventions, such as deep breathing relaxation technique, in managing symptoms related to gastritis. By reducing pain intensity, this technique can improve the quality of life for patients and provide an effective alternative in the management of acute gastritis. The results of this study can serve as a basis for implementing deep breathing relaxation technique as part of a holistic treatment approach for gastritis patients.
