Abstract

LARAS AWALIA HERDIANTI. Liquid Soap Formulation of African Leaf Ethanol Extract (Vernonia amygdalina Del.) Against Staphylococcus aureus. Supervised by RENI MULYANI and DIKDIK MULYADI. Soap is a skin cleansing preparation that is used for beauty, health and to protect the skin from bacteria. Recently, the attention of the world community has begun to focus on natural products and green technology, thus the development of natural products is increasingly widespread. One of the plants that has many medicinal properties among the people of Indonesia is african leaf (Vernonia amygdalina Del.). African leaves have secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, terpenoids and saponins that are useful as antibacterials. Therefore, this study aims to make a liquid soap formulation of african leaf extract according to the quality of liquid soap and to determine its activity against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria by disc diffusion method using 3 formulations of african leaf extract, namely 3% (w/v), 6% (w/v) and 9% (w/v). The results obtained that all formulations of liquid soap with African leaf extract meet the requirements of SNI for liquid soap and are suitable for use. The results of the irritation test showed that all formulations did not irritate the skin of volunteers with no redness, itching and burning sensation and the results of the antibacterial activity test showed that all formulations produced an inhibition zone with moderate to strong power and of the three formulations which had the greatest inhibitory zone activity is the formulation of 9% (w/v) african leaf extract.
