Abstract

Hypertension is a non-communicable disease that is quite high and risky, the prevalence of hypertension in West Java in the population aged ≥ 18 years is 39.6%. Complications of hypertension such as heart disease and stroke, one way to prevent complications is to lower or control blood pressure in people with hypertension. The purpose of this study is to apply deep breathing relaxation to control blood pressure in patients with hypertension. This research was conducted using a case study method. Hypertension is an increase in systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mmHg and diastolic ≥ 90 mmHg. One of the causes of hypertension is stress, and hypertension treatment can be done by means of non-pharmacological therapy, including deep breathing relaxation. Deep breathing relaxation is a technique used to reduce stress and chronic pain levels, as well as reduce oxygen consumption, metabolism, respiratory rate, heart rate, muscle tension and blood pressure. The case study conducted on Mrs. I for 5 days with 3 visits, the results of the assessment of blood pressure were 160/100 mmHg, and Mrs. I was experiencing stress due to economic problems. Nursing problems that arise are knowledge deficits about hypertension related to lack of exposure to information. Interventions include providing health education and teaching deep breathing relaxation. Deep breathing relaxation was carried out 3 times a day with a duration of 15 minutes, and the final result was that the blood pressure of Mrs. I was 130/80 mmHg. The results of this case study show that there is a decrease in blood pressure in Mrs. I after stress management with deep breathing relaxation techniques is carried out, this is in accordance with research conducted by Yanti Agggraini whose majority of respondents experienced a decrease in blood pressure after being given deep breathing relaxation therapy. Conclusion: stress management can be applied to patients with hypertension because it can lower blood pressure.
