The Effect of Divorce on Behaviour of Ronnie's Character in The Last Song Novel by Nicholas Sparks

Abstract

The Last Song is a novel of an American author whose namely Nicholas Sparks.  This novel tells the 

story of a girl named Ronnie who'd been received something on her journey that goes through various significant changes, which are caused by her parents who'd been divorced.  The divorce that happened to Ronnie's parents affected her so much so that she turned into a different person.  This difference occurs both in behavior and in terms of Ronnie's own physical.  In some common case that occurs, divorce is often became a major factor in the personal development of the child itself, including Ronnie.  Ronnie, who was in her teen age who was still in the phase of searching for her own identity, became a rebellious person.  This study aims to examine the impact of parental divorce on the novel entitled The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks.  This research method is a descriptive qualitative method and uses a mimetic approaches.  In researching the The Last Song novel, the researcher uses Hurlock's (2012) theory. When parents and children have a positive and addictive relationship, it will help adolescents in achieving optimal developmental tasks.  On the other hand, the relationship that is not harmonious between children and their parents can have a negative effect on divorce that occurs in a family.  Based on Hurlock's (2012) theory, the impact of divorce on children depicted in The Last Song novel includes various things, including changes in apathetic behavior, changes in the relationship between children and parents to become disharmonious and the emergence of rebellious nature in children.
