Abstract
SINTIA LESTARI. Synthesis and Characterization of Superabsorbent Hydrogel Based on Natrium Alginate-Bentonite as a Slow-Release Fertilizer Coated. Guided by LELA MUKMILAH YUNINGSIH and SALIH MUHARAM. Superabsorbent hydrogels are cross-linked hydrophilic polymers that can absorb water hundreds to thousands of times its dry weight. Because of its properties and characteristics, hydrogels are widely applied in agriculture as a medium to inhibit the release of fertilizer to the environment aimed at improving the efficiency of fertilizer use (slow-release fertilizer/SRF). This study has been done the manufacture of the superabsorbent hydrogel as SRF with the cross-linking method and composite sodium alginate and bentonite with urea filler. The hydrogels formed are characterized by structure and morphology with FTIR and SEM-EDS, as well as swelling tests to see how it absorbs water. Furthermore, to test the performance of hydrogel as SRF conducted urea release test at various pH and time as well as hydrogel test as planting medium. The results showed urea fertilizer has filled the structure and surface of hydrogels with a swelling ratio of 2,894.30% (BAC-1) and 3,428.52% (BAC-2). Furthermore, the amount of urea released in 15-180 minutes is 5.98% (BAC-1-Urea) and 4.67% (BAC-2-Urea). The addition of cross-linking agents CaCl2 and epichlorohydrin provides increased glassing power, swelling, and adsorption capacity to urea and its morphology. The hydrogel is not affected by acid or alkaline changes, so hydrogels have the potential to be applied in various water characters in agriculture.
