Abstract

The research entitled “Runtuhan Peradaban Eropa Pasca Perang Dunia I Tercermin dalam Puisi The Waste Land Karya T.S. Eliot”. The research aims at describing symbols, imagery and representation of the collapse of European civilization after World War I. The method applied qualitative descriptive with a postcolonial approach. The finding are (a) Symbol that consists of private symbols, conventional symbols, and natural symbols. (b) Imagery that consists of visual imagery, auditory imagery, kinesthetic imagery, olfactory imagery, tactile imagery, and organic imagery. Both of these elements are depicts the destruction of Europe, post-war disappointment, spiritual decline, loss of hope, mass death and victims of war, grief and suffering, the traumatic effect of war, confusion, unwise leaders, increased role of women, prostitution and sexual lust. Representation of the collapse of European civilization found include: decline in religious behavior, decline in the spirit of life, loss of moral values, mass death, mental breakdown, destruction of infrastructure, economic destruction, and social change.
