Abstract

The title of this research is Kehidupan Sosial Tokoh Catherine dalam Novel Northanger Abbey Karya Jane Austen. The objectives of this research are to find out the social environment in Catherine's life, and to find out the influence of the social environment on Catherine's life in the novel. The theories used in this research are sociology of literature from Wellek and Warren (2013), setting from Nurgiyantoro (2007), and characterization from Waluyo (2002). The method that the writer used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The study approach that used in this research is sociology of literature on the contents of literary work to analyze social phenomenon that concern in the novel. The results of the data that found in this research are the description of the social environment in Catherine's life which is seen through aspects of the setting and social setting. The social environment in Catherine's life which is seen through the physical aspects of Catherine, the psychological aspects of the Catherine character, and the social aspects of the Catherine.
