Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the scientific inquiry model on students' scientific reasoning abilities. The process of science learning in schools at least emphasizes students to think more broadly, logically and rationally based on experience so the importance of scientific reasoning for students. The research method used was quasi-experimental with the design of Nonequivalent Control- Group design. This research was conducted at Sukabumi City 13th Junior High School with a research population namely class VII. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The scientific reasoning indicators used are probabilistic thinking, proportional thinking, volume conservation, identification and control of variables and deductive hypothetical thinking. The results showed that the highest N-gain average value in the experimental class was in the probabilistic thinking indicator and the lowest N-gain value was in proportional thinking, while the highest N-gain average value in the control class was in the variable identification and control indicator and the lowest N-gain value is proportional thinking. In addition, the results of the study also showed that the experimental class N-gain value was 0.63 higher than the control class, which was 0.47. The results of the Z test show that the data produced is in accordance with the criteria namely Zcount = 3.404> Ztable = 1.960 at the 0.05 confidence level, so H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted, meaning there are significant differences in scientific reasoning abilities of students between experimental classes using the scientific inquiry model with a control class that uses the Direct instruction model on global warming material. In addition teachers and students provide positive responses to the application of the scientific inquiry model to students' scientific reasoning abilities.
