Abstract

The Research entitled Mekanisme Pertahanan Tokoh Bruno dalam Novel The Boy in the Striped Pajamas karya John Boyne. The research is useful to know what kind of defense mechanisms. The method used in this research is qualitative method which is prepared by descriptive analysis with psychology of literature approach. The research used relevant theories are character theory, conflict, anxiety, defense mechanisms. Based on the research result of the study, Bruno is a child of Nazi soldiers who face unpleasant conditions against him, then Bruno uses the defense mechanism as a way to solve the problems that faces him, there are 8 types of defense mechanisms used by Bruno namely projection, sublimation, identification, aggression and apathy, denial, fantasy, displacement and rationalization. Then found some of the impacts of defense mechanisms, namely negative such as lie, breaking the rule, and some positive effects such as entertain himself, reduce disappointment, etc.
