Abstract

The title of this research is Depresi Tokoh Hannah Baker dalam Novel Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. The research was conducted to reveal the representation of Hannah Baker’s depression by analyze the symptoms and the causes of her depression. The research method that applied in this research is qualitative descriptive with psychology of literature approach. The data collecting technique applied in this research is reading and making note technique. The data analysis technique applied in this research is the technique from Miles and Hubberman (2014). The result of this research showed that there are seven kinds of depression symptoms experienced by Hannah Baker. They are emotional symptoms (e.g state of feeling annoyed, angry, sad, hopeless and pessimist), cognitive symptoms (e.g not showing any positive thoughts, criticizing herself), anxious symptom, empty symptom, psychological symptoms (e.g burden feeling, sensitive, and guilty feeling), social symptoms (e.g feeling uneasy to tell her problems to other people, less of confidence) and motivational symptoms (suicide thought and the desire of to do it). The causes of depression are mostly because of life events that give bad impacts to Hannah’s life.
